Greetings!
Over the weekend we had a serious incursion incident.
A hangar tenant escorted his friend onto the airport. Later, the hangar tenant told his friend it was okay to just drive back to the gate and let himself out. Unfortunately, the friend got lost and was apprehended by the Fire Department.
This incident was totally avoidable.
If you allow someone to come inside the Airport's Air Operations Area (AOA), you are responsible for them - period. Guests must never leave your direct control and when they leave they must be escorted back to the gate. Even when they appear to be familiar with the Airport, the tenant must escort the guests back to the gate.
Please help make Paine Field safe and secure. Please call me or Bruce if you have questions or suggestions. Sincerely, Dave Waggoner Paine Field Airport Director |

Vintage Aircraft Weekend begins August 31
Historic Flight Foundation (HFF) is pleased to host the Fifth Annual Vintage Aircraft Weekend (VAW), August 31 - September 1, 2012. Together with its Paine Field Partners and the Snohomish County Tourism Promotion Area, VAW has become a signature event for families. Join HFF for food, fun, flying, music, history, inspiration and excitement.
Visiting pilots and aircraft may number as many as 65, all stellar examples of aviation during the three decades between Charles Lindbergh's solo crossing of the Atlantic in 1927 and commercialized Boeing jet service of the same route in 1957.
The festival begins on Friday with arrival of aircraft throughout the day. That evening beginning at 6 pm, 250 lucky patrons will attend a "Big Band Dinner Dance" featuring the fifteen-piece, tuxedo-clad "Kings of Swing." Group swing-dance lessons by guest professionals give everyone a chance to participate. Period attire is encouraged.
The main event begins Saturday morning, the first of September, at 9 am VAW features a first-class Speakers Bureau, live music, two flying sessions of vintage aircraft, vintage automobiles and military vehicles, fine food, vintage bicycles, vintage clothing and uniforms, and a host of opportunities for kids and parents to interact with displays and vendors. The final flight will conclude at 5 pm.
For tickets to the Big Band Dinner Dance or VAW, contact HFF Visitor Services at visitorservices@historicflight.org / (425) 348-3200 or Brown Paper Tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/261309. |

WPA Paine Field Chapter Awards Scholarship
On Saturday, July 14, 2012, the Paine Field Chapter of the Washington Pilots Association awarded a $1,000 scholarship for aviation education to Luciano Worl. Worl is a current student in Central Washington University's aviation program with a cumulative GPA of 3.769 and he was recently awarded his Commercial Pilot certificate. After graduation in 2013, Worl is planning to join the Navy and become a Naval Aviator.
The annual Kurt Mason Aviation Education Scholarship was established to promote continued education in aviation-related fields or flight training. The scholarship program is named after long-time WPA member and Museum of Flight Restoration Center member, Kurt Mason. The program continues to grow as the word gets out to more schools and organizations. Last year, the WPA received two applications for the scholarship while this year it received eight applications.
The Paine Field Chapter of the WPA congratulates Luciano Worl and wishes him luck in his future aviation career. Many thanks go to the scholarship committee members: Kevin T. Kelly, Dave Wheeler, Les Smith, Jim Morgan, Karen Reid, and Kevin Mason. |

Wildlife Hazards: American Crows
| |
Moth outbreak at Boeing Flightline. |
Although American crows rarely get struck by aircraft, there still may be a hazard present if there are large flocks. Crows roost at night together in great numbers; often traveling many miles to the same stand of trees every day. It is not uncommon to see thousands of crows flying together during the dawn and dusk hours as they arrive or leave a roost site. USDA Biologist, Matt Stevens has noticed these crow flights for the last month or so right here on the North end of Paine Field. Coupled with this daily migration, there has been large numbers of insects hatched out on the airfield also attracting the crows. Millions of moths were recently found on the Boeing flightline, along with hundreds of crows gorging on them. The Paine Field Wildlife Team is working on this issue, but pilots should remain alert. |
Aviation Academy Graduates 36 Students
Aviation Academy, sponsored by the Paine Field Chapter of the Washington Pilots Association (WPA) and Snohomish County Airport (Paine Field), is a ground school-like course that provides young adults (ages 13-18) with information about aviation careers and what it takes to become a pilot. The program is taught by volunteer aviation professionals and enthusiasts, all with goal of sharing the joy of flight with the next generation. The course, held each spring at Everett Community College's Aviation Maintenance classrooms at Paine Field, consists of eight classes which include subjects such as weather, navigation, flight planning, Air Traffic Control, and Four Forces of Flight. Students also attend a field trip that includes a tour of the Paine Field airport environment, air traffic control tower, fire station, and the Museum of Flight Restoration Center. Other tours include visiting the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour and the Historic Flight at Kilo-6 facility at Paine Field. The program culminates with our graduation and flights on General Aviation Day, where our graduates get to utilize what they have learned in a practical application.
This year 36 students attended the course. With that many students it takes the support of many individuals and organizations to make the program successful. The Aviation Academy director Kevin Kelly would like to thank the Paine Field airport staff; class instructors Greg Bell, Steve Waterman, Les Smith, Allen Kam (NOAA), Richard Newman (Chinook Flight Simulations); our Career Night guest speakers, including Paul Arrington; classroom helpers Craig Hogan and Mark Wilkerson; Michelle Johnson at EvCC Aviation Maintenance; Barry (Museum of Flight Restoration Center); Jackye Skerlong and the staff of the Future of Flight gift store; John Sessions, Vanessa Dunn and the volunteers at Historic Flight Foundation; various organizations that donate handout materials; and the Young Eagles pilots who flew our students on Aviation Day.
Thanks to generous donations from the Anacortes chapter of the WPA in memory of Jim Hannah, WPA has scholarship funds available for deserving students who need assistance with the course tuition fee. If you know of an individual student or group that could benefit from the tuition fund, please contact Kevin Kelly at aviation_academy@wpaflys.org.
The WPA looks forward to sharing the joy of aviation, and the many career opportunities that the industry offers, with next year's class! For more information about the program, please visit the webpage at http://www.wpaflys.org/aviation_academy.html. |

The Airport Would Like You to Meet Its Seasonal Helpers

The Airport would like to introduce its two newest Seasonal Helpers, Michael Biggs and Justin Wimmer. They will be out and around the Airport helping with various projects with our Maintenance Technicians. Please, welcome them.
Biggs and Wimmer are both from the Pacific Northwest with Biggs rearing from Lake Stevens and Wimmer from the Bothell area.
Biggs has experience in cable installation, electrical troubleshooting and building construction; and his aspirations include becoming a Boeing employee or possibly coming to work with our crew here at Paine Field. Wimmer is a Senior at Bothell High school and will be participating in the Running Start Program at Cascadia Community College this Fall with aspirations of acquiring a Business degree.
These two are very fine young men and extremely hard workers. The Airport is proud to have them as members of our Airport Family. |
Please send me an email with any upcoming events and future article ideas for Paine Field Happenings.
Sincerely,
Jennifer K. Eckman
