The Science of Flight for Teachers introduces educators to the scientific principles of flight. The class also provides participants with instructional strategies that effectively present these principles to their students. In addition, participants will be exposed to the many facets of aviation and the career opportunities available to their students. spacer

Highlights of the course:

1.  Introduction to the physics of flight;
2.  Classroom experiments and demonstrations;
3.  Strategies for teaching the principles of flight;
4.  Field trips include:
▪ Boeing Everett plant
▪ The Future of Flight Museum
▪ Paine Field control tower
▪ The Museum of Flight and Challenger Learning Center
▪ Aircraft Maintenance Facilities
▪ The Museum of Flight Restoration Center
5.  Two hours of flight instruction in a Cessna 172 given by a Certified Flight Instructor
6.  15 to 20 minute rides in various aircraft;
7.  Career sessions with aviation professionals including aircraft mechanics, a search and rescue crew, airline pilots, aircraft dispatchers, FAA control tower personnel and administrators;
8.  Instructional strategies effective in raising middle school and secondary students’ awareness of modern aviation as a career option.
9.  Discussions and strategies designed to attract minority and female students to the aviation field. Many of these issues will be directly addressed by female and minority members of the aviation community.

Course Instructor:
 
Gary Evans
is a science and mathematics teacher with the Snohomish School District and former adjunct faculty member of Seattle Pacific University, as well as a private pilot. He holds a Masters of Education Degree in Science Education, has developed science, mathematics, and aviation curricula, and has been a classroom teacher for 38 years.

The Science of Flight for Teachers is in its 12th year.
